“Next year’s model” is a misnomer. Tracking when 2027 model-year vehicles first appeared in live listings shows the new model year lands more than a year ahead of the calendar: the first 2027s reached dealer lots in December 2025 , and by July 2026 we were tracking over 163,000 2027 model-year VINs in a single month.

The curve is a doubling ramp: volumes roughly double every two months through the first half of 2026. The model year “changeover” is not an event — it is a seven-month flood that starts in winter and peaks in mid-summer.
Who ships first
The very first 2027 on lots was the Chevrolet Bolt, in December 2025. By January the early wave was in full swing: the Nissan Rogue, Pathfinder and Armada, the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Gladiator, the Honda Pilot, the Ford Bronco, the Chevrolet Equinox EV, the Infiniti QX60 and the Lincoln Nautilus. Redesigned or high-priority models jump the calendar first; carried-over designs trickle in through spring and summer.
A curiosity for VIN readers: the model year lives in the 10th character of the VIN on a repeating cycle, so decoding it takes context — one reason “what year is this car, really” is best answered by the factory’s own paperwork, like the window sticker.
What this means if you’re buying
- The clearance clock starts in January, not September. Once 2027s hit a segment, the 2026s on the same lot begin the model-year discount slide we measured in our price trends study.
- “Newest” costs a full step. An early-wave 2027 carries the freshest premium in the market; the identical-looking late 2026 build is the rational buy.
- Watch the segment, not the calendar. Each model’s changeover happens on its own schedule — the month the next year lands on your target model’s page is the month its outgoing-year leverage begins.
Methodology notes
Counts are 2027 model-year VINs tracked in live monthly listing data (minimum 10 VINs per model-month to filter data-entry noise); “first appearance” is the first qualifying month per model. August 2026 is a partial month (snapshot August 4) and is omitted from the chart. See how we build these studies.
