An older model year changes more than the price.
A price gap is not a depreciation rate
These prices compare different vehicles on the market. An older model year may offer a lower asking price, but mileage, equipment and the mix of listings also change.
Condition needs its own check
History, equipment and physical condition can change the value of an individual car. A model-year median cannot confirm any of them.

Answers grounded in the data shown here.
How much does a Ford Explorer depreciate per year?
This snapshot does not measure annual depreciation of one car. The 2002 typically asks $4,000, 92% below the 2027's $50,742. These are different vehicles listed on October 24, 2026; mileage, trim, condition and redesigns can affect the difference.
How do older Ford Explorer asking prices compare with the newest model year?

Which Ford Explorer model year is cheapest?
The 1997 Ford Explorer is the most affordable model year we track, typically listed at $2,995. Compare every year in the table above.
How many Ford Explorer model years can I compare here?

Is this a forecast of my car's resale value?
No. These are dealer asking prices for different vehicles in a dated snapshot. They do not measure the value lost by one car over time, original MSRP depreciation, or final transaction prices.
How does mileage affect Ford Explorer asking prices?
Open a model year to see its available odometer groups, asking prices and listing counts. Mileage is the distance recorded on the odometer. Price differences also reflect condition, trim and equipment; sparse groups are labelled separately.

Where these numbers come from
Compiled by VinAssessment from dealer listing data. Prices shown are asking prices, not completed transactions.
- Market & currency
- United States · USD · all available trims
- Data snapshot
- October 24, 2026
- Typical price
- Median asking price per model year, or the average when the median is unavailable. The price basis is labelled on each row.
- Price range
- 25th–75th percentile: the middle half of the listing sample, not a confidence interval. Missing ranges are not estimated.
- Coverage
- 31 qualifying model years with at least 10 listings each. Headline price-gap calculations require at least 25 listings per year. Gaps in data do not establish a generation change.
- Mileage groups
- Only positive, usable odometer readings. Groups with fewer than 5 listings are observations, not dependable market estimates. Reported odometer readings do not verify actual lifetime mileage.
- What is not measured
- Original MSRP loss, future resale value, or a guaranteed price for an individual VIN.
